New Delhi: MPs Kodikunnil Suresh and A. Sampath have urged union railway minister Suresh Prabhu to abandon the move to hand over a portion of the Thiruvananthapuram railway division to the Madurai division. In a memorandum submitted to the Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, the MPs alleged that the proposal to attach the Nagercoil-Kanyakumari line to the Madurai division would result in downgrading of the Thiruvananthapuram division, as it happened with the Palakkad division when it was bifurcated for creating a new division based in Salem. Sampath pointed out that thhe central government had promised to set up a railway coaching yard at Nemom in the Railway budget six years ago. The land in Pallichal grama panchayat under the possession of the Railway could be uttilized for the purpose, he said. "The commissioning of the Vizhinjam port could lead to a significant increase in goods movements and freight earnings at the Thiruvananthapuram...

division. The proposed move would result in dwindling of revenues for the division," the MP added. Kodikunnil Suresh also demanded that the Punalur-Chenkotta line should be brought under the Thiruvananthapuram division once the ongoing work to convert it into a broad gauge line is completed. Railway officials in Tamil Nadu have been indifferent towards the conversion works on the stretch, he added

MADURAI: When the Goods and Services Tax (GST) took off as planned on Saturday, it derailed some of the simple plans made by the common man.
A 52-year-old man from Madurai tried to postpone his second class reservation ticket to the next day, but was told that his request could not be considered.
“I requested the railway staff in the counter at Madurai Junction Railway Station to postpone my ticket to the next day on the same train. However, they said the facility was not available because of GST. Only for AC classes,

service tax will be collected. For second class, there is no service tax. Hence the problem.”
The affected passenger said he was travelling in second class. “I ended up cancelling my tickets and almost lost 50 per cent of the total fare as the cancellation charge is very high now. If postponement facility is available, passengers will not loose in the way of cancellation charges. Instead, passengers will have to pay only reservation charges for advancing or postponing their reservations.”
The telescopic fare (a system in which the fare decreases in slabs as the length of the journey increases) is also discontinued for all classes.
“The telescopic fare can be availed of for a journey between two stations that are directly connected. Now, this facility is discontinued after the implementation of GST as the fare changes for Express trains,” said a source with the railway.
In a press release, the Madurai division of Southern Railway said a mammoth exercise has been undertaken to modify the integrated application system of Indian Railways for issue of passenger tickets and freight Invoices to capture GST related details. A similar exercise has been undertaken for non-computerised services like wayleave charges and parcels. “Thus on July 1, all railway tickets and invoices issued will be GST compliant,” it said.
In the case of combined return journey tickets for AC and First Class tickets, separate tickets for onward journey and return journey ticket may be issued in all cases. However, for suburban UTS tickets, for which journey originating or terminating station is within the same State, or same UTS issue of combined return journey ticket over suburban section, the existing practice shall continue.
The press release said that circular journey tickets for AC and first class tickets, issue of AC class tickets from UTS counter, issue of cluster tickets from PRS for AC and first class tickets and issue combined tickets issued, except season tickets, shall be discontinued.

A handy guide for tourists from Travel Club Madurai
By coming up with a comprehensive city map, Travel Club Madurai has made it easier for travellers to navigate the temple town. The handy fan-fold map offers crisp information on various aspects of the city from the popular tourist attractions to lesser known pockets, places to eat and things to buy and contacts of hotels and destinations. How good is the idea of a hand map in the digital era? “Though the internet offers information at the click of a button, it's too much of a pile for any discerning traveller. There's need for selected and relevant information and we have tried to accommodate the best of research in the guide,” says Rishwanth

Jayaraj, the club treasurer. “I travelled to Germany last year and was surprised to see maps for all kinds of activities, from something as simple as taking a train to going for a walk.”
The Travel Club members took inspiration from a map designed for a Calcutta Walk, an activity for tourists. “Madurai’s need for such map was overdue given the number of tourists who visit the city daily,” says Jayaraj. Cartographer Samit Roychoudhury who has the distinction of designing map for the Indian Railways, called as The Great Indian Railway Atlas, was invited to draw the Madurai map. “He stayed in the city for a couple of days to understand the topography, culture and the essence of the place.”
“The existing maps for Madurai are just road maps that give directions. Useful information for the tourists is missing,” says Dr. G Vasudevan, a founding member of Travel Club. “This is a maiden attempt, which has to be refined subsequently.” He adds, “When people think of Madurai, they only think of temples whereas there's much more to the region. For instance, in Thoothukudi and Rameswaram, a pilgrim town, water sports are coming up along the coast. We want to popularise attraction across southern Tamil Nadu, like what can be done in Dindigul or Karaikudi.” In a bid to promote the entire Madurai region, Travel Club has also launched a website www.travelclubmadurai.com that offers all kinds of details on nearby places of interest like Chettinad, Munnar and Palani.
“In future, we also plan to design a calender of festivals, on the lines of Kerala. If we are able to chalk out the dates and venues of various festivals in the region for the next couple of years and provide it in the form of a calender for tourists, it will be easier for people to plan,” says Vasudevan. “Festivals like the Chithirai tiruvizha, Jallikattu and Pongal need to be popularised, as travellers don't want to see just monuments these days, but experience the life and culture of a place.”
The Madurai city map will be placed at the airport, railway station and hotels for tourists free of cost.
