Mysuru/New Delhi: With the relocation of Tipu Armoury completed, train services on the new double track between Mysuru and Bengaluru would commence within July 15, according to sources in the Railway Department.
American company PSL-Wolfe Private Limited and New Delhi-based PSL Engineering took up the relocation works of the 228-year-old armoury on March 6, 2017, for which the Railways spent about Rs. 13.5 crore. The nearly 1000 tonne armoury was moved 100 mts away from the original site and the relocation was completed on March 10.
After the relocation of the armoury, the

Railway authorities inspected the track doubling works several times and found no deficiency in it.
Sources said that a team from the Statutory Board of the Railways (Commissioner for Railway Safety) would inspect the newly laid double track this week to find out the efficiency and submit its report along with the Efficiency Certificate to the Board.
The Board, after examining the report by the Statutory Board team, would give its green signal for the commencement of train services on the new track, sources added.
Soon, travel in Economy AC coaches with cheaper price
Train passengers will soon have option of travelling in a new class of ‘Economy AC coaches’ with fares less than normal 3AC tariff.
The proposed fully AC train will have three-tier Economy AC coaches besides AC-3, AC-2 and AC-1 classes as part of the transformation exercise. An added feature would be automatic doors. The Railways is exploring an idea to introduce fully AC trains in select routes, aiming to provide comfort by facilitating AC travel for maximum passengers.
An exercise has been undertaken for a transformation in service by upgrading existing facilities in trains and stations and a separate cell has been created by the railways for this.
“There will not be any chilling effect like in other AC classes and the temperature will be fixed around 24-25 degrees. The aim is to make the passengers comfortable and not make them feel the outside heat,” a senior Railway Ministry official said.

The cost of converting each rake to a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit is around Rs. 10.3 crore
Fifteen pairs of trains operating from Bengaluru to various destinations with the conventional diesel locomotive hauled rakes, will be converted to Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) rakes at an estimated cost of Rs. 278 crore.
The 15 pairs of trains have 27 rakes and the cost of converting each rake to MEMU is around Rs. 10.3 crore.

is part of the implementation of Phase 1A of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail System as a joint venture with the Ministry of Railways as per the MoU signed between the State government with the Railways early this year. A source told The Hindu that the orders were issued recently by the Urban Development Department on receiving consent from the Finance Department.
Consequent to the approval the following existing rakes will be upgraded to MEMU and include one rake each of Train Numbers 56231/56232, 56233/56234, 56263/56264 and 56237/56238 – operating as Bengaluru-Mysuru passenger services. The other rakes which will be converted into MEMU operate between Bengaluru-Marikuppam (3 rakes) Bengaluru-Jolarpetai (2 rakes), Bengaluru-Hindupur, Bengaluru Cant- Bangarpet, Bangarpet-Marikuppam (3 rakes) and Bengaluru-Bangarpet.
In addition to this, the Railways have proposed new services for introduction without entailing any additional cost by the State government, along different corridors including Bengalulru to Channapatana which will be extended up to Pandavapura beyond Mandya.
This is expected to commence in due course as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has already issued clearance for operating electric trains on the newly electrified 25 Kv AC stretch between Ramanagaram and Yeliyuru on the Bengaluru-Mandya-Mysuru section.
Sources in the South Western Railways said that as the MEMU service already operates between Bengaluru and Ramanagaram, the same train could be extended up to Mandya. Once the electrification of tracks till Mysuru is completed and the power substation at Yeliyuru becomes functional, the services can be extended to Mysuru and this is likely by July this year.
Apart from the above services, it has been proposed to introduce a new service in the peak hours between Byappanahalli and Whitefield. The cost of this will be borne by the State government.
The MEMU maintenance facility at Banaswadi will be augmented at a cost of Rs. 25 crore. Sources said the conversion of the existing DEMU rakes to MEMU will happen over a period of two years and be completed by 2019 as per the terms and conditions stipulated under the MoU.

with the task of installation of Wi-Fi facility at 400 stations across the country in collaboration with Google, under the Digital India initiative of the Union government.
Presently, free Wi-Fi is available at KRS Bengaluru City, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru Central, and Kalaburagi stations through RailTel. Belagavi station has got the facility under the MPLAD scheme. With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.
In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.
Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.
One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.
