As part of the Southern Railway’s initiative to go green and save on electricity costs by producing 4 MW of solar power, rooftop solar plants will be installed at 11 stations in Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram railway divisions.
“As far as the Railways is concerned, it is a win-win situation,” said G Suryanarayana, divisional electrical engineer (general services) Palakkad division. “Currently, the Railways pays a tariff of `8.10 per unit to the KSEB. Once the solar energy is produced, the Railways will need to pay only `3.64 per unit for 25 years as per the deal agreed with Azure Power Rooftop Solutions Pvt Ltd.”

solar plants with a total installed capacity of 390 kilowatt peak (kWp) will be set up at seven stations in Palakkad division — Kozhikode, Mangalore Central, Kannur, Palakkad, Shoranur, Mangalore Junction and Thalassery — and four plants with a total capacity of 300 kWp in Thiruvananthapuram division — Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Nagercoil and Thrissur.
Central Electronics Ltd, which is the implementing agency for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, had floated tenders to install, operate and maintain the solar plants.
The tender document lists A1 category stations such as Ernakulam as well as A and B category stations in the state for the implementation of grid-connected rooftop solar photovoltaic systems atop Railways office buildings and stations. The bids of Azure Power Rooftop Solutions has been finalised for Kerala, revealed Railways officers.
According to Railways sources, contracts and tenders floated for installing the rooftop solar plants were based on developer mode, wherein the project developer will do the site survey, design, manufacture, erection testing and commissioning, including warranty, operation and maintenance of the solar panels.
The Railways has signed a long-term contract for power purchase from these solar plants with the bidder at `3.64 per unit for 25 years.
The cost of installing a 10 kWp plant is `7.3 lakh. In Palakkad, a 10 kWp plant at the divisional railway manager’s office and two 10 kWp plants at the Divisional Railway Hospital are already producing power. Similarly, a 10 kWp plant has been commissioned at the office of the divisional railway manager in Thiruvananthapuram also.

The Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has almost finalised plans for doubling the 1.5-km line between Netravathi Cabin and Mangaluru Central Railway Station as well as building an additional platform at the Central Railway Station.
Once the zonal headquarters at Chennai accords approval for the plan, tenders would be called for and work would start, said Divisional Railway Manager Naresh Lalwani. The single line between Netravathi and Central Railway Station at present has put severe constraints on the Railways to receive and despatch trains at ease.
While the platform work was sanctioned in

the previous Railway budget, the work on line doubling was sanctioned in the 2017-18 budget. A sum of ₹ 21 crore has been earmarked for the doubling work, Mr. Lalwani told The Hindu.
Mangaluru Central, at present, has four platforms and caters to 26 originating and terminating trains every day, while eight trains halt at the station overnight. Adding one more platform at the station, along with line doubling, would considerably enhance the capacity of the station to handle more trains. Southern Railway is likely to take up doubling of the single loop line between Central Railway Station and the Netravathi-Mangaluru Junction bypass line later.
Holistic approach
Mr. Lalwani said that the new platform is being so designed that the Railways should be able to receive and despatch trains from and to all platforms. Some gradient issues while laying the double line would have to be addressed during the construction stage itself, he said.
Though the length of the new line is just 1.5 km, the Railways has to work under severe constraint as very limited space is available adjoining the existing track. Blocks on operation of trains have to be properly planned not to severely affect regular operations.
At the same time, the Railways would not require much land for line doubling, Mr. Lalwani said. However, one road overbridge near the Central Railway Station has to be dismantled to execute doubling work, he added.
Meanwhile, tenders are invited to install two elevators at Mangaluru Junction towards enhancing passenger comfort, he said.
Train not to be extended
The Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) of Palakkad Division in its meeting on Tuesday decided against extending Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly Gomateshwara Express to Mangaluru Central despite the demand from residents.
The decision is contrary to its earlier decision where the DRUCC had recommended shifting of three trains — Chennai Egmore, Kacheguda and Puducherry express — to Mangaluru Junction to provide space for the Gomateshwara Express. Southern Railway’s zonal headquarters had taken objection to the move.
Divisional Railway Manager Naresh Lalwani told The Hindu that the number of passengers boarding the three trains is more than those boarding Gomateshwara Express. Shifting terminals thus would be inconvenient to passengers, he quoted DRUCC as saying.
Only when an additional platform is completed at Mangaluru Central, the division can think of extending the train, he added.

South Western Railway (SWR) appears to be misleading the public with contradictory statements on diversion of the Bengaluru-Karwar/ Kannur overnight express via the newly opened Kunigal-Hassan route that drastically reduces travel time.
Presently, the train runs via Mysuru and takes 18 hours to traverse about 700 km

Better cancel Kannur portion and increase Karwar coaches, anyhow Kannur already has a dedicated train from Bengaluru. MYS should also not lose the only train to Mangaluru, Karnataka has the worst intra-state connectivity. So better would be to run an additional train between SBC-MAQ via Nelamangala.
