MANINAGAR RAIL CROSSING HERE FOREVER

Maninagar rail crossing here forever
Of the 16 crossings in the city , AMC has given the work order only for an overbridge at Gota crossing.

you among the hundreds who get stuck at Maninagar level crossing when trains pass by? You have our sympathies. For, there doesn’t seem to be any resolution in sight for the problem. The density of rail traffic in Maninagar can be estimated from the fact that more than 50 trains pass through this area daily. While the norm is for vehicular traffic to stop and let trains pass, traffic at the level crossing sometimes reaches such a peak that trains have to wait, resulting in delays.
There have been multiple instances of the operator being unable to bring down the gates as commuters refuse to stop even if the train is approaching. A train cannot pass a level crossing unless the gate is closed. This leads to delay in train schedules. In a recent example, on July 29, a locomotive and train coming from opposite directions had to stop for 15 minutes at the crossing because vehicles continued movement and the operator could not close the gates.
However, when the gates are brought down, the traffic jam gets denser within seconds, with the queue of vehicles stretching right up to Swaminarayan temple on one side and till Maninagar underpass on the other. Amid the daily mayhem, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has thrown up its hands in helplessness. Civic body officials say there is no solution to this problem at present.
A month ago, the Ahmedabad division of Western Railways had sent a proposal to the AMC stating the need for 16 Railway Overbridges (ROBs) at an equal number of level crossings that fall within AMC city limits. Maninagar was among those that needed immediate attenion. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Ahmedabad Dinesh Kumar told Mirror, “We are converting metre gauge into broad gauge. The work will be completed in two years. It is imperative that ROBs are constructed as soon as possible as more trains will run through the city once the conversion is completed.
It will be difficult to build them at a later stage.” However, the AMC said that it is not feasible to build any kind of bridge at at least two stations currently—Maninagar and Naroda. The other one lies next to DRM’s office. Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DyMC) Mukesh Gadhvi said, “In its study, the AMC found that neither is it feasible to build an overbridge, nor possible to have an underbridge at the crossing.” Explaining that the main hurdle was lack of space to build access ramps for an overbridge or slopes for an underbridge, Gadhvi said, “We are constantly looking at the problem and many discussions have been held but lack of space is the main problem. Removing buildings in the area is not feasible because of the high cost of compensation the AMC would have to pay in lieu of the same.”
AMCs projects: 200 crore works underway, 200 crore on anvil
AMC is working on railway projects worth 400 crore at present, said DyMC Gadhvi. Of the 16 crossings that Railways has listed out, AMC has given the work order for the one at Gota. The ROB at Ranip is nearing completion while the proposal for the one at Jagatpur, to be built on PPP model, is awaiting final clearance. Cumulatively, these projects will cost the civic body 200 crore. AMC will be paying the Railways to widen the ROBs at Sardarnagar and Punitnagar level crossings. The civic body is also studying the feasibility of six other ROBs which, if approved, will cost an estimated 200 crore.
Others involved
Of the list of 16, three ROBs will be built by agencies other than AMC. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will construct an ROB on a road that is primarily used by its vehicles in Sabarmati area, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) will build another that falls within its jurisdiction while the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) will build the third one which lies near the 32-feet ring road.
When is an ROB required?
An ROB or an RUB is required when the Average Traffic Vehicle Unit (ATVU) crosses 1lakh per day. The ATVU is calculated by multiplying the number of four-wheelers plying through the crossing in 24 hours by the number of trains passing through in a day. If this resultant number crosses 1 lakh, an ROB or RUB can be sanctioned, said DRM Dinesh Kumar.

AHMEDABAD: If everything goes to plan, Sabarmati railway station will see its first train originate from there in March next year. Western Railway has decided to construct five platforms which will be able to handle stoppages of 24-coach trains.
Divisional railway officer Rahul Agarwal said construction work has begun and is likely to be completed by January. The officials said Sabarmati will serve as an alternative to Kalupur, especially for trains originating from Ahmedabad and headed towards Delhi.

Agarwal further said that the station has two broad-gauge platforms and one meter-gauge platform. With the conversion of the Ahmedabad-Mehsana line, the station will have three broad-gauge platforms and two more are being constructed.
Officials said important trains like Ashram Express, Rajdhani and Delhi Mail will originate from Sabarmati. Officials said that Members of Parliament in meetings with railway authorities said that with Kalupur railway station reaching its peak, the Railways should have Maninagar and Sabarmati as terminal stations from where the trains can originate.
Meanwhile, an official said that the railways had set a target for on-board cleaning services in 26 trains and the service has begun on 21 trains. The five remaining trains will also get the services soon. The railways will promote its Clean my Coach mobile app and posters will be put on trains to make more people use it. The railways has been getting nearly 200 complaints everyday about coach cleaning.
The DRM also said that barring platforms 8 and 9, all platforms will have lifts. Platform 12, like the platform 1, will have an escalator.

Ahmedabad: Railway minister Suresh Prabhu, who is visiting the state on Tuesday, will inaugurate a series of projects including electrification and gauge conversion of Ahmedabad-Mehsana track and a third line between Ahmedabad and Vatva.
The minister will lay the foundation stone of these projects at Mehsana. He will arrive in the city on Tuesday and head to Mehsana by train. The minister will also lay foundation stones for various other projects.
According to railway officials, both the projects from Ahmedabad are important as they would ease movement of trains towards the main station.

Officials said that the third line between Ahmedabad and Vatva will facilitate quicker terminus management for trains. Officials said that several trains coming from Mumbai get delayed in absence of the third line as there is lot of congestion.
Sources said that trains like Karnavati and Double decker have to wait for nearly 20 minutes because of the congestion on the lines towards Mumbai. The third line will help to take the trains to other platforms.
Officials said that apart from this, the Ahmedabad-Delhi route will also go electric. The route electrification project was announced last year. Officials said that the minister will also lay the foundation stone for the guage conversion between Ahmedabad and Mehsana. With this conversion, the entire Ahmedabad-Delhi stretch will have double track, barring a small stretch between Mehsana and Palanpur.
At present Ashram Express to Delhi from Ahmedabad takes 16 hours but with the double track the time will be reduced to 14 hours, said railway officials.
Apart from these, Prabhu will lay the foundation stone for gauge conversion for Mehsana-Taranga Hill, Miygam-Samlaya, Bhuj-Naliya, Somnath-Kodinar and a new line of Modasa to Shamlaji. He will also inaugurate the project of double-track between Surendranagar and Rajkot.

Absolutely Correct... There is a lot of space available and south and mumbai, pune bound trains can easily ply over congestion free....But i think the only problem may be the zoo nearby...as in case the terminus noise and people movement would be for almost 24 hrs which authorities may not permit as the zoo is in nearby vicinity.
