Filthy stretches of land that greet passengers who look out of their railway compartments may soon be history with the Railways making efforts to keep its tracks and land clean.
A ride on the New Delhi-Sadar Bazar-Sabzi Mandi stretch undertaken on Monday was witness to the large tracts of land along the tracks that have been cleared of domestic waste dumped by the jhuggi dwellers and hawkers from over the Railway Over Bridges (ROB).
Truckloads of waste have been cleared with the area along the tracks being carpeted with good earth, while rag

pickers are on the job for a major part of the day.
In a month, the Railways have spent Rs.10 lakh on the cleanliness drive.
Arun Arora, Divisional Railway Manager (Delhi), said, “There is a big change now only because of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). We are really grateful to the NGT for bringing such an important issue into focus. We are even issuing show-cause notices to our own employees residing in railway colonies if waste is found dumped from their house on the railway area. They are asked to show why their allotment not be cancelled, besides the imposition of fine,” he said.
Between the New Delhi and Sadar Bazaar Railway stations, not only jhuggi dwellers dump waste on the railway land and tracks, but a lot also comes from hawkers illegally squatting alongside a Railway Over Bridge.
With the NGT announcing a fine of Rs.5,000 on anyone found littering railway property in March, Railway authorities have lifted the garbage and written to the civic agencies.
Further ahead, litter from jhuggies encroaching on railway land has been cleared. Traces of freshly strewn garbage, however, could still be seen.
A huge chunk of waste comes from vendors on Pul Mithai, an ROB connecting Sadar Bazaar with Old Delhi.
According to a senior railway official, “We are doing our bit but till the time encroachment is not removed, nothing can be done.”
New walls have been erected and shrubs been planted in the land cleared, but the walls white-washed not long ago are already stained.
Jhuggi dwellers, meanwhile, could be spotted defecating along the track in the absence of a free-to-use toilet.
