THE SCENIC train ride from Kalka to Shimla is going to become more panoramic. The Northern Railway is planning to introduce a see-through Vistadome coach on the UNESCO World Heritage track. Railway officials said the coach would be manufactured at its workshop in Kalka, but it is still at the drawing board stage.
“As per the plan, we will initially manufacture one coach. It will have large glass windows and glass ceiling and it will give an amazing experience to the tourists travelling in the coach,” Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ambala, Dinesh Kumar, told Chandigarh Newsline. “It [coach] will be introduced on trial basis. Manufacturing of more such coaches would depend on the success of this coach.” Kumar said the railways are
yet to decide the fare of the coach.
“It will be done later as the manufacturing is completed. But, it would be available for booking on requests,” he said. Officials at the Kalka Railways Workshop told Chandigarh Newsline that the plan is to manufacture an 18-seater coach. “We have recently sent a revised drawing of the coach to the railways headquarters. We are waiting for the approval of the drawings,” said the official. He added that it would be difficult to say how much time it is going to take to complete the coach and it would be attached to any of the trains.
According to Northern Railway officials, eight regular trains are operational on the Kalka-Shimla railway route. There are two special luxury trains as well designed for tourists and booked on request.
Two months ago, the railway ministry launched the first-ever train with glass-roof coaches in Visakhapatnam. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu recently said that the same type of train would be introduced in Kashmir Valley, too. “We hope that it would attract more tourists. The Kalka-Shimla route records a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. Once this coach is started, the passengers will have a memorable journey,” said the railway official.

SHIMLA: Beginning of the final location survey for the 498-km Bilaspur-Mandi-Leh rail line has left the residents of Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir elated. The railway track would be of immense strategic importance for defence forces along the China border and also boost tourism in these areas.
The survey is expected to be completed by 2019 after which construction of the track would start.
With the objective to connect Leh with a broad gauge line, Indian Railways had carried the first survey in 2008-09
work of final location survey, launched by union railway minister Suresh Prabhu from Leh on Tuesday, has been entrusted to RITES Limited and is scheduled to be completed by March 2019 with an approximate cost of Rs 157 crore.
The final survey is a precursor to actual construction from Bilaspur to Leh via Manali. The alignment shall connect Mandi, Kullu, Manali, Keylong and other important towns of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir enroute.
The line from Bilaspur shall be further connected to Bhanupali between Anandpur Sahib and Nangal Dam.
Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Chief Executive Councilor, Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo said that people of the Ladakh region are happy with the start of final survey
"As construction of Bilaspur-Mandi-Leh would take time, I had requested union railway minister to construct rail line within Ladakh region on the line of Kashmir valley and he has assured to consider our demand," he added.
Lonpo said that no one is ready to give a deadline for the completion of the rail line project as they are apprehensive about the challenges to be thrown by Shivalik, Himalayan and Zanskar ranges.
"It is being estimated that after survey, a railway track could be laid in 8-10 years," he added.
Lahaul-Spiti, MLA, Ravi Thakur said that both Lahaul-Spiti and Leh has very limited connectivity with outer world. He said construction of rail line would also boost tourism in the entire region. HP leader of opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal said that track was of immense importance both for strategic as well as socio-economic needs.
He said that final survey shows the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to complete this project of national importance at the earliest. "This project is gift of Modi to the people of Himachal and Ladakh," he added

शिमला: होली के मौके पर 112 साल पुराना ऐतिहासिक हेरिटेज स्टीम इंजन एक बार फिर दौड़ा। स्टीम इंजन में इंग्लैंड के 30 सैलानियों ने सफर कर भरपूर आनंद उठाया। करीब 20 किलोमीटर के सफर के दौरान विदेशी पर्यटकों को जहां एक और सुंदर नजारे देखने को मिलते हैं, वहीं 20 किलोमीटर प्रति घंटा की रफ्तार से कालका शिमला रेलवे ट्रेक पर विरासत को अपनी यादों में कैद करने का मौका मिला। समय-समय पर विदेशी नागरिकों को स्टीम इंजन अब पहली पसंद बनता जा रहा है। इंग्लैंड के 30 के करीब पर्यटक यहां स्टीम इंजन में यात्रा करने के बाद खुश नजर आए। गौरतलब है कि कालका-शिमला रेलवे ट्रेक वर्ल्ड हेरिटेज घोषित किया गया है। यह ट्रेक हमेशा ही पर्यटकों की पसंदीदा जगह रहा है। स्टीम इंजन सबसे पहले अंग्रेजों ने शुरू किया था। हर साल पर्यटक यहां आकर हसीन यादें कैद कर ले जाते हैं।

1903 में बने इंजन में अब दम नहीं1शिमला-कालका नैरोगेज रेलवे लाइन बनने के बाद 1903 में जब इस पर पहली बार रेल चली थी तो केसी-520 नाम के इसी इंजन ने बोगियों को खींचा था। अब इसमें इतना दम नहीं है कि यह कालका से शिमला तक के करीब सौ किलोमीटर के सफर को पूरा कर सके। 1

जागरण संवाददाता, शिमला : शिमला-कालका ऐतिहासिक रेलवे ट्रैक पर शुक्रवार को एक बार फिर से भाप वाला इंजन छुक-छुक करता दिखाई दिया। लगभग पूरी दुनिया में ट्रैक से उतर चुके
109 साल पुराने इस इंजन को उत्तर रेलवे ने पर्यटकों की विशेष मांग पर ट्रैक पर उतारा। शुक्रवार को भाप इंजन केसी-520 ने शिमला से कैथली घाट तक सफर किया। सीटी बजाता और धुआं उड़ाता यह इंजन शिमला-कालका रेलवे ट्रैक पर नजर आया तो उस दौर की याद दिला दी जब रेल इसी तरह के कोयला इंजनों के सहारे चला करती थी। 1लोगों में स्टीम लोकोमोटिव इंजन के क्रेज का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि विदेशी सैलानियों ने इसे विशेष तौर पर किराये पर लिया और तीन बोगियों के साथ शिमला से कैथलीघाट तक गए। इतना ही नहीं जब यह इंजन ट्रैक पर नजर आया तो भारी संख्या में सैलानी और स्थानीय लोग इसकी झलक पाने के लिए जगह-जगह इकट्ठे हो गए।शिमला कालका रेल ट्रैक पर शिमला से केथली घाट तक भाप इंजन चलाया गया

Shimla: Shortage of wheels is beginning to take a toll on the Unesco world heritage Kalka-Shimla railway track. At this time of the year, when hordes of tourists take the toy trains running between Kalka and Shimla to usher in Christmas and New Year, the railways is faced with a peculiar problem. After successfuly replacing obsolete train engines with new ones, it has been caught in a situation of "lesser" wheels.
