Kolkata: The motorman of the Howrah-Burdwan local who nearly rammed into the rear of another EMU at Serampore station on Saturday evening is likely to lose job for negligence. A high-level probe has revealed that the driver put passengers at risk by not maintaining a significant distance from the train in front.
"It came as a surprise that an experienced motorman committed such an error. A person is entrusted with driving an EMU local only after years of experience. Though there was little possibility of a major accident on Saturday as the train's speed wasn't high, the motorman will be handed a major penalty chargesheet and stands to lose his job," an official in Eastern Railway's Howrah division said.
main line Burdwan local left Howrah barely a few minutes behind the one for Tarakeswar. The two trains were to follow the same route till Sheoraphuli Jn after which the Tarakeswar local would turn left. The probe revealed that the accused motorman maintained a short distance from the Tarakeswar local, stopping at red signals outside stations, allowing the Tarakeswar local to leave the platforms before proceeding.
Trouble occurred after both trains crossed Rishra. There are four platforms at Serampore. Platforms 1, 2 and 3 are used by trains for Bandel and beyond while the remaining one is used by Up trains moving towards Tarakeswar.
"Both trains were on line 3. As the Tarakeswar local was leading, the point was set for platform 4 just ahead of Serampore station. After the local turned left towards platform 4, the corresponding signal before the crossing turned red. The motorman of the Bardhaman local was to move towards platform 3. He saw the red signal and found platform 3 empty in front. For a moment, he seems to have forgotten that the Tarakeswar local had turned towards platform 4. Instead of stopping at the signal, he decided to drive ahead towards platform 3. The point was still set towards platform 4 though and his train also turned left. Before the motorman could stop, the first coach had reached the platform. This was gross negligence on the motorman's part," the official said
हुगली। हुगली जिले के श्रीरामपुर स्टेशन पर एक बड़ा हादसा होते-होते रह गया। शनिवार देर शाम श्रीरामपुर स्टेशन के 4 नंबर प्लेटफार्म पर दो लोकल ट्रेन आमने-सामने आ गई। हालांकि चालक ने समय रहते ट्रेन रोक दी जिससे दर्जनों लोगों की जान बच गई।
मिली जानकारी के अनुसार अप 37339 तारकेश्वर लोकल को चार नम्बर प्लेटफार्म पर आना था जबकि 37851 बर्दवान लोकल तीन नंबर पर आनी थी। तारकेश्वर लोकल पहले आकर चार नंबर प्लेटफार्म पर खड़ी थी।
ट्रेन रवाना होने से पहले ही लोगों ने देखा कि उसी प्लेफार्म पर बर्दवान
लोकल तेज गति से आ रही है। संभावित हादसे को भांप कर स्टेशन पर मौजूद लोग शोर मचाने लगे।
उधर तारकेश्वर लोकल के गार्ड प्लेटफार्म पर कूद कर बर्दवान लोकल के चालक को गाडी रोकने का संकेत देने लगे। खतरे को भांपते ही बर्दवान लोकल के चालक ने इमरजेंसी ब्रेक लगाया और प्लेटफार्म पर खड़ी तारकेश्वर लोकर से महज दो फुट पहले बर्दवान लोकल रुक गई।
हालांकि इमरजेंसी ब्रेक लगने से बर्दवान लोकल को कई झटके लगे जिससे उसमे मौजूद यात्री भी डर गए थे।
घटना के बाद यात्रियों ने इसे रेलवे की लापरवाही मानते हुए विरोध प्रदर्शन भी किया। एक ही प्लेटफार्म पर दो ट्रेन कैसे आई यह अभी तक स्पष्ट नहीं है। रेलवे ने मामले की जांच किए जाने की बात कही है।

KOLKATA: An accident was averted on Saturday evening at the Serampore station after the driver of a Howrah-Burdwan local managed to bring the train to a halt before hitting another local already standing in the same platform. The railway authorities have ordered a probe to find out how the Howrah-Burdwan local moved forward even when the platform berth was not clear.
"It's a serious issue as both the Up EMU locals came on the same track and was about to collide. A possible accident has been averted," said CPRO of Eastern Railway R NMahapatra. "It is being looked into if the driver of the Howrah-Burdwan local overshot the signal and somehow managed to stop close behind the Howrah-Tarakeswar local. We are also
trying find if something was wrong in the signalling system," he added. The divisional railway manager, Howrah, immediately rushed to the spot.
According to sources, the 37339-Up Howrah-Tarakeswar local, which left Howrah station at 7pm, halted at platform number 4 of the Serampore station at 7.52pm. The 37851-Up Howrah-Burdwan local, which left Howrah at 7.10pm, came on the same track and stopped close behind the Tarakeswar local. Serampore station, which operates an automatic signalling, has very less scope for human error in the system.
Sources in the rail safety department said that when a train leaves a platform, signals change according to last vehicle display mechanism. Unless the train moves from the platform physically , the signal behind the train will not change if the automatic signalling is on. Accordingly , the train behind slows down or stops depending on the signal the motorman is getting. The motorman decides on the speed of the train depending on the "one yellow" or "double yellow" signal he is getting.
If the motorman sees a red signal at the auto signal zone, he would stop immediately and wait for a minute. If the signal stays red even after that, the motorman is permitted to move at 10km per hour at night.
"It has to be seen if the signal had functioned properly . There is a data logging system at the signals which records signal movements continuously, "said an official. Once the data log is taken, it is then synchronized with the speedometer box to corroborate the statement of the motorman.

হুগলি: সাঁইথিয়া রেল দুর্ঘটনার ভয়াবহ স্মৃতি উসকে দিল শ্রীরামপুর। অল্পের জন্য প্রাণে বাঁচলেন অসংখ্য যাত্রী।
শনিবার সন্ধে সাতটা পঞ্চান্ন। হাওড়া-বর্ধমান মেইন লাইনের, শ্রীরামপুর স্টেশনের ৪ নম্বর প্ল্যাটফর্মে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল আপ তারকেশ্বর লোকাল। একই সময় ৩ নম্বর প্ল্যাটফর্ম দিয়ে আপ হাওড়া-বর্ধমান গ্যালোপিং লোকালের যাওয়ার কথা ছিল। কিন্ত তা না করে, ট্রেনটি চলে আসে ৪ নম্বরে! শেষ মুহূর্তে ব্রেক কষেন চালক। ঝাঁকুনি দিয়ে থেমে যায় ট্রেন! তারকেশ্বর লোকাল থেকে তখন বর্ধমান লোকালের দূরত্ব মাত্র এক ফুট!
ঘটনায় ব্যাপক আতঙ্ক ছড়ায় অফিস ফেরত যাত্রীদের মধ্যে। সবাই হুড়মুড়িয়ে ট্রেন থেকে নেমে পড়েন। ঘটনার জেরে আপ লাইনে প্রায়
এক ঘণ্টা ট্রেন চলাচল বন্ধ থাকে। রেলের আধিকারিকদের ঘিরে বিক্ষোভ দেখান উত্তেজিত যাত্রীরা।
সূত্রের খবর, রেল কর্তারা প্রাথমিকভাবে মনে করছেন, বর্ধমান লোকালের চালক সিগনাল মানেননি। পূর্ণাঙ্গ তদন্তের নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
শ্রীরামপুরের এই ঘটনায় অনেকেরই স্মৃতিতে, ২০১০ সালের ১৯ জুলাইয়ের একটি ঘটনা।
সেবার সাঁইথিয়া স্টেশনে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা বনাঞ্চল এক্সপ্রেসের পিছনে সজোরে এসে ধাক্কা মেরেছিল উত্তরবঙ্গ এক্সপ্রেস! ঘটনায় উত্তরবঙ্গ এক্সপ্রেসের চালক, সহকারী চালক এবং বনাঞ্চল এক্সপ্রেসের গার্ড-সহ ৬৮ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছিল। তদন্তে উঠে আসে, সিগনাল লাল থাকা সত্ত্বেও, প্রায় নব্বই কিলোমিটার গতিবেগে স্টেশনে ঢুকে পড়েছিল উত্তরবঙ্গ এক্সপ্রেস! এদিন সেই ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি না হলেও, আরও একবার প্রশ্নের মুখে পড়ল সরকারের সুরক্ষিত রেল যাত্রার প্রতিশ্রুতি।
