Foot overbridge, waiting room inauguration on Saturday
The Thrissur railway station, one of the main stations in the State, is ready with many new facilities for passengers.
A foot overbridge, waiting room, drinking water vending machine, and display boards will be inaugurated officially by C.N. Jayadevan, MP, and Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar on Saturday.
The foot overbridge, on the middle of the platforms,
near the main entrance, has been a long-pending demand by the passengers. The existing narrow foot overbridges are situated on both ends of the platforms. Passengers had to carry their luggage and walk till the end of the platforms to use them. Many used to cross the tracks to avoid them, leading to accidents.
The air-conditioned waiting room, maintained by Kudumbasree Mission, is another facility, according to station manager Joseph N. Nainan. It has facilities such as Wi-Fi, TV, toilets, library, kids entertainment zone, and charging facility for mobile phones and laptops.
The 24-hour drinking water vending machine on platform 1 will provide cold and clean water at Rs. 5 a litre. Four electronic display boards have been set up.
The renovated fourth platform also will also be inaugurated.
Works on an escalator on the first platform and lifts on the first and second platforms are also progressing fast.
The foot overbrige has been constructed at Rs. 1 crore allocated by the State government.

Air-conditioned rest room inaugurated at station
Good news for passengers who are forced to wait for trains braving the heat and dust at the Thrissur railway station.
An air-conditioned rest room was opened at the station on Wednesday, one of the major railway stations in the central Kerala.
Passengers can make use of the facility at ₹20 for an hour. The rest room for
upper class travellers at the station has been transformed to an air-conditioned room for all.
More amenities
The round-the-clock hall, maintained with the cooperation of the Kudumbasree Mission, will have facilities such as free Wi-Fi facility, TV, toilet, and library. Tea and coffee will be served at the hall. There will be facility for entertainment for children too.
The maintenance charge has been given for Kudumbasree as part of railway’s policy to encourage voluntary organisers and entrepreneurs, officials said.
As such a facility implemented in Ernakulam was accepted by the passengers, railways decided to extend the service in Thrissur too, which is an A-1 category station.
Meanwhile, the Poonkunnam railway station will get an amount of ₹1.5 crore for its development activities.
While Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar, who is also the Thrissur MLA, allotted ₹50 lakh from his local development fund, C.N. Jaydevan, MP, sanctioned ₹50 lakh from his development fund for building a station building. Railways are also expected to allocate another ₹50 lakh for the project, according to official sources.

Survey claims 86% of participants support the project
The majority of people in the State support the proposed 430-km high speed railway line (HSR) between Kochuveli in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, if a survey conducted in 11 districts is any indication.
The survey held for Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (KHSRCL), a public limited company floated by the government to execute the project, has found that 86% of the participants supported the project.
survey was conducted using the systematic random methodology by Gurgaon-based Centre for Forecasting & Research (Cfore) between November 23, 2016 and January 14 this year. The findings of the survey that covered 110 Assembly constituencies and the report had been submitted to the KHSRCL, chief executive of Cfore, Premchand Palety, said.
Hassle-free travel
The Rs. 1,27,849-crore project is aimed at making travel hassle-free and at reducing congestion on State roads.
In all, 73% of the respondents were aware of the project and 88% of them approved of it.
Mr. Paelty said 82% of those who were unaware approved of it when the interviewer explained it to them. The approval rating was over 80%.
Reduced travel time
Reducing the time taken to travel across the State and the air pollution and the corridor turning a catalyst for development are the advantages. Those who opposed the project said large-scale acquisition of land and displacement of families would be needed.
13,447 interviewed
A total of 100-120 voters from each Assembly segment in the districts were interviewed. The respondents were randomly selected from the voters’ list using a special software. In all, 13,447 people, one voter from each household, were interviewed.
Through the survey, the authorities are trying to counter the opposition that may come up against land acquisition and dissent against development projects.
As much as 1,155.57 hectares of private land has to be acquired, 3,868 residential/commercial structures relocated, and 36,923 trees felled as per the DPR prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
In 45 minutes in Kochi
With trains running at a maximum speed of 300 km per hour, a journey to Kollam will take only 20 minutes, Kochi 45 minutes, Kozhikode 90 minutes, and Kannur 120 minutes. Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Valancherry, Kozhikode, and Kannur are the stations proposed.

It is tough to materialise in Kerala. Land acquisition is not at all easy. Lot of objections for the projects are exisitng, especially from those who will lose the land.
