A First Look at India’s New High Speed Trains :Indian Railways is preparing to purchase twenty-five E5 Series Shinkansen trainsets from Japan for India’s first High Speed Rail (HSR) project, at an estimated cost that falls just short of 800 million USD.
The new trains will connect Mumbai, the capital city of the State of Maharashtra, with Ahmedabad, the second most populous metropolitan area in India, located in the State of Gujarat. The railway will run along the Arabian Sea coast with stops in Surat and Vadodara, respectively the second and third largest cities in the State of Gujarat. Potentially, the line can be extended from Ahmedabad to New Delhi and from Thane towards Pune and Bengaluru.
new high speed corridor is currently expected to open to the public in 2023. The 508 km distance will be covered in only two hours and seven minutes. The fastest train currently operating between Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad Junction is the Duronto Express, which takes approximately 7 hours running non-stop between the two cities, at a maximum speed of 120 kph.
The E5 series, built by a consortium of Hitachi Rail and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, is operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) in 10 car trainsets on the Tōhoku Shinkansen line and on the Hokkaido Shinkansen line.
In June 2017 an unnamed senior Indian Railway Ministry official involved in the project provided the press with some insider information regarding the Shinkansen configuration to be utilized in India.
New Bullet Trains To Have Washrooms With Mirrors For Makeup, Breastfeeding Rooms & Baby Toilets
So let’s take the Hokkaido Shinkansen as a reference and have a closer look at the E5 Series, in order to find out what Indian travelers should expect in the near future.
The train car body is built in an aluminum alloy that makes it lighter and allows it to travel up to a maximum speed of 320 km/h (200 mph). The train is 253 meters long, weighs 453.5 tons and is powered by overhead catenary. The rail track gauge is 1,435 mm.
The ten cars can carry a total of 731 seated passengers, in three distinct classes: Ordinary Class (658 seats), Green Car (55 seats) and Gran Class (18 seats).
According to the Ministry official the Indian configuration will have 698 Standard Class seats and 55 Business Class seats, effectively doing away with the Japanese Gran Class.
The Japanese Ordinary Class (equivalent to the Indian Standard Class) is organized in a 3+2 seating arrangement, with a seat pitch of 1,040 mm. Each seat features: an adjustable headrest; a table which folds out from the seat in front; a power outlet.
The Japanese Green Car (equivalent to the Indian Business Class) is organized in a 2+2 row seating arrangement, a seat pitch of 1,160 mm, seat width of 475 mm and a maximum reclining angle of 31 degrees. Each seat features: a large adjustable headrest that incorporates a reading light; a large table which folds out from the seat in front; a power outlet that allows plugging in a computer or a mobile phone while traveling; a tray for drinks that can be stowed away in the armrest.
The Japanese Gran Class, apparently eliminated in the Indian configuration, is designed to be even more comfortable and luxurious than the Green Car.
The Tōhoku Shinkansen Ordinary Class, Green Car and Gran Class interiors can be viewed with 360 degree panoramic imagery on Google Maps. It’s well worth having a look at them.
In terms of on-board facilities the Shinkansen is designed to ensure a barrier-free and user-friendly travel experience.
The Indian configuration will see lavatories and urinals installed in alternate train cars: lavatories in cars number 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9; urinals in cars number 2, 4, 6 and 8. There will be separate lavatories for men and women.
There will be two large and accessible restrooms, fitting a toilet with improved handles to support electric wheelchair users and other physically-challenged customers.
One multipurpose room will be equipped with multi-functional furniture which can be folded into a cot bed and a bench — this space can be used for instance for changing or breastfeeding.
Low sinks and baby toilet seats will also be provided for children.
Women only lavatories will be equipped with triple mirrors, toilets with boards for changing clothing and more.
All cabins and restroom stalls will be equipped with emergency call devices for enhanced security. Security cameras will operate together with emergency call devices in all cabins.
Business class will provide special luggage space for passengers. The project was approved in May 2014 by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting with the Chairman of the High Speed Rail Corporation of India, Satish Agnihotri. The feasibility study on the project was carried out in July 2015 by RITES, Italferr and Systra. The governments of India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 12 December 2015 to implement the corridor.

But India’s high speed vision does not end here, the country’s bright future is being planned today. The Diamond Quadrilateral project will establish an HSR network connecting the four Indian metro cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is likely in September when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduled
to visit India.

A senior official said, “As per the tentative programme, the bhoomi pujan will be done at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Japanese PM. The event is most likely to be held in Gujarat.“
An India-Japan joint statement issued during Modi's visit in November 2016 had stated, “The two Prime Ministers recognised the importance of accelerating the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project by holding the groundbreaking ceremony in 2017.“
Estimated to cost Rs 97,636 crore, 81% funding for it will come by way of a loan from Japan.The estimate includes possible cost-escalation, interest during construction and import duties. It is a soft loan for 50 years at 0.1% annual interest with a 15-year moratorium.

the route will be elevated. hence stations should ideally be elevated without interfering with the existing tracks.
as far as stops at virar and dahanu is concerned, I think these are well thought of. Today the suburban network on western line stretches upto dahanu with population increasing here exponentially.
Today if a person wants to go to virar from bkc by ola or meru, you will have to shell out a minimum of Rs. 1200 and would take a minimum of 90 minutes.
he is given a option to cover this distance in 20 minutes for Rs. 400, will he not opt for it. He will grab it with both hands.

It's a totally unwanted project. That money could have been used for completing other pending projects. IR too will spend loads of money for this apart from the loan - for the land acquisition etc....

We all know that building and expanding the city’s lifeline is expected to come at a huge cost. But, the question on everyone’s mind is who will take on that financial burden. If railway sources in Mumbai are to be believed, the Centre is reluctant to invest money in the proposed Virar-Vasai-Diva-Panvel suburban line — pegged at Rs. 9,000 crore — and has written to the state to contribute more towards the project.
At present, the two financiers — Indian Railways and Maharashtra government –are sharing the project cost equally. But, railway officials in Mumbai claim that the Railway Board in Delhi has sent a letter asking them to shoulder more, for the project. It is unclear whether the railways is looking
at a 60:40 ratio (Maharashtra government and railways) or even more. “At the end of the day, the state government will reap the benefits of this vital suburban corridor,” said a senior railway official.
The Virar-Vasai-Diva-Panvel corridor will be 70.14 km long, and will connect all three lines — Western, Central and Harbour – and further strengthen public transport in the metropolitan region.
The government and railways have been trying to work out flexible working hours for commuters so as to divide the super dense load that the suburban system witnesses. During peak hours, more than 16 people stand per square metre of space inside local trains.
With this new corridor in place, setting up additional commercial and office spaces in the extended suburbs would also seem viable. “Moreover there is another international airport coming up in Navi Mumbai. It’s a win-win situation for the state government and so we want them to contribute more, financially,” explained another railway official. This project has been approved by the NITI Aayog and now awaits final approval by the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Allotment of land for a carshed for the ambitious Seawoods-Uran line project has led to a tussle between the various authorities governing the project. Officials from the Central Railway (CR) have claimed that while they had marked a site suitable for the carshed in the project plan, the CIDCO is offering a plot far away. The project is a joint venture between the City Industrial and Development Corporation (CIDCO), the state government and the CR. It seeks to directly link Uran town, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the newly developed areas of Mumbai, including the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The 22.5-km line will have 10 stations — Seawoods, Sarsangam, Targhatr, Bamandongri, Kharkopar, Gavar, Ranjanpada, Nhava Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran. According to railway sources, while the CR was hopeful of being allotted almost 30 acres of land close to the Ranjanpada station for the carshed, the CIDCO has raised concerns on this.
the initial planning stages, acquiring space around Ranajan-pada for the carshed was decided upon. We will need to stable at least 15 rakes in the shed, out of which at least 10 are expected to be on the line. The location is strategic as it will enable us to easily put the rakes on tracks and also offer convenient commute for the staff who will work on the line,” said a senior CR official. To discuss land allotment concerns, the CR has been in talks with the state and the CIDCO. The CIDCO has given them the options of stabling the rakes at either the Sanpada carshed or at one proposed to be built in Mohape, CR officials said.
“The Sanpada carshed already manages stabling of many rakes for the harbour and the trans-harbour line section. The proposed plot at Mohape is very far from the Seawoods-Uran line. Bringing rakes and inviting workforce to attend operations at the shed could become difficult,” the official added. Land acquisition problems beyond Kharkopar on the Seawoods-Uran line has already long delayed the project. However, efforts to find a land for the carshed is on, officials said.
“CIDCO has no land available around the Ranjanpada station for a carshed. However, since the past three-four days, options are being looked into to provide a plot nearby. We will figure out a possible space for this carshed in the future, as acquiring land for running services forms a priority. It is too early to even comment on allotment for the Seawoods-Uran project,” said a railway official working closely with CIDCO on the project.
The Mohape plot has already been proposed as a site for a carshed for the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation’s (MRVC) Karjat-Panvel project, which would help connect Karjat to Navi Mumbai without a switch at Thane station.The shed will also help in stabling rakes for the proposed Virar-Vasai-Panvel suburban corridor.
“Planning for the Mohape carshed is at an initial stage, and we are still deciding on its possible usage. Though the shed is basically expected to be built stage-wise according to requirement, it will have an initial capacity to park 60 rakes at least. Also, as we do not have a say in the Ranjanpada planning or the Uran project, we will participate if asked,” said a senior MRVC official.

Location of carshed is very important issue for the operational feasibility/ convenience, as large numbers of rakes are deployed to operate hundreds of services on the suburban/metro route. Issue of identification of plot for the car shed must have been decided before starting of the project.

ट्रेन की टक्कर 8• रिपोर्टर, मुंबई : मध्य रेलवे के ठाणे स्टेशन पर सिर्फ रेल गाड़ियां ही नहीं, यात्रियों की सांसें भी रुकी हैं। 2016 में ठाणे रेलवे स्टेशन पर 129 यात्रियों की जान गई है। यात्रियों के लिए असुरक्षित स्टेशनों में ठाणे के बाद विरार दूसरे और मानखुर्द तीसरे नंबर पर है। रेलवे स्टेशनों पर लगातार बढ़ रही मौत की घटनाओं ने रेल प्रशासन के यात्री सुरक्षा संबंधी दावों की पोल खोल दी है।
एक आरटीआई से खुलासा हुआ है कि सेंट्रल, वेस्टर्न, हार्बर और ट्रांस हार्बर के 140 रेलवे स्टेशनों पर साल 2016 में लोकल गाड़ियों की चपेट में आने से 3202 यात्रियों की मौत हुई है। यहां 3363 यात्री ट्रेन की चपेट में आने से जख्मी भी हुए थे। 3202 मौतों में से सबसे ज्यादा 129 यात्रियों की मौत ठाणे स्टेशन पर हुई है। इसके बाद पश्चिम रेलवे के विरार स्टेशन पर 81 यात्रियों की जान गई है, जबकि तीसरे स्थान पर हार्बर का मानखुर्द स्टेशन है, जहां पर 37 यात्रियों की मौत हुई है। 3202 मौतों में 1088 मौतें पश्चिम रेलवे के अंतर्गत हुई हैं, जबकि मध्य रेलवे के स्टेशनों पर 2114 यात्रियों की जान गई है।
रोज औसतन 10 की मौत
मुंबई की लोकल ट्रेनों में हर रोज 80 लाख यात्री सफर करते हैं। जीआरपी द्वारा जारी की जानेवाली डेथ रिपोर्ट के अनुसार रोजाना औसतन 10 यात्रियों की जान रेल पटरियों पर जाती है।
ट्रैक पार करते
समय 1798 की मौत
मरने वालों में बड़ी संख्या रेलवे ट्रैक पार करने वालों की है। 3202 मौतों में से 1798 की जान पिछले साल ट्रैक पार करते हुए गई। इसके अलावा 657 यात्रियों की जान ट्रेन से गिरने की वजह से हुई है।
हाईकोर्ट का खटखटाएंगे दरवाजा
आरटीआई कार्यकर्ता समीर झवेरी के मुताबिक, पटरी पर मौतें एक गंभीर समस्या है। इस पर हम रेल प्रशासन को कोर्ट में घसीटेंगे, ताकि भविष्य में यात्रियों की सुरक्षा के लिए कड़े कदम उठाए जाएं।
