A BRIEF ON COMMISSIONING OF 5th and 6th LINE BETWEEN MOORE
MARKET COMPLEX (MMC) AND BASIN BRIDGE JUNCTION (BBQ) AND
REPERCUSSION ON TRAINS SERVICES FROM 23/08/16 TO 07/10/16 (46 Days)
1.1 Background
MMC
...
Terminal serves as the hub of suburban passengers dealing with EMU
trains from Arakkonam (AJJ) and Gummidipoondi (GPD) and also connects the
Chennai Central Station. A total of about 2 Lakhs passengers through 260 suburban
EMU trains are handled per day at MMC.
.
Movement of trains in the MMC-BBQ corridor is however already constrained
severely since the track infrastructure is shared with long distance Mail/Express and
Passenger trains reaching and starting from the Chennai Central Station. There is
considerable cris-cross movement already at BBQ resulting in the suburban trains as
well as the Mail/ Express and Passenger trains from AJJ & GPD are detained at
Home signals due to conflicting movements. This bottleneck formation at BBQ is not
only increasing the commuting time for passengers but also posing a severe
constraint in introduction of new services.
1.2 The Project
Accordingly, the work of “Provision of 5th and 6th lines between Moore MMC
and BBQ” has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.30.53 crores. The scope of this critical
project includes remodeling of BBQ yard and MMC Yard, construction of the 5th and
6
th lines between MMC & BBQ and provision of two additional platforms at MMC. The
work is targeted for completion in this financial year itself.
Provision of the 5th & 6th lines between MMC & BBQ will provide separate
corridor for EMU train towards Arakkonam direction to ensure un-interrupted
movement of the suburban trains thereby reducing commuting time for the
passengers besides enhancing the sectional capacity, which will improve the
throughput of the section. In addition there will be increased mobility for Mail/Express
and Passenger trains terminating and originating at Chennai Central since a number
of crossovers will be removed and higher speed will be attained, thus considerably
improving punctuality.
2
1.3 Execution of Work
Commissioning of 5th & 6th line involves major changes in track layout at
Moore Market Complex and Basin Bridge Junction, installation of new Signalling
arrangements and erection and alignment of Overhead Traction equipments in MMC
and BBQ area. To carry out these major changes and to create new infrastructure,
the work was in progress without any disruption to train services for last six months.
The project has entered into final phase of commissioning which requires daily
5 hours Traffic Block during nights hours (from 2300 hrs to 0400 hours) and mega
traffic Blocks at Moore Market Complex station from 0000 hrs of 17/09/16 to 0400 hrs
of 19/09/16 for 52 hours.
Apart from the traffic Blocks, the changes in yard layouts necessitates the
restriction on movement of trains in some directions. Due to traffic blocks and change
in yard layouts, there is a need to change the pattern of Suburban as well as Mail/
Express trains. Change in pattern of train services includes cancellation and
diversion of Suburban services, diversion of Mail/express trains Via PeramburVyaserpadi
–Korukkupet. The final Phase of execution of 5th and 6th line between
MMC & BBQ is spread over 46 days from 23/08/2016 to 07/10/2016.
The major changes in pattern of suburban services from Moore Market
Complex towards Arakkonam are from 13/09/2016 to 18/09/2016 (6 days.). Whereas
the major changes in the pattern of suburban services from Moore Market Complex
to Gummidipundi/ Sullurupetta is from 13/09/2016 to 26/09/16 (14 days). As regards
Mail/Express trains, 2 daily, 3 Tri weekly, 5 Bi-weekly and 7 weekly trains are
diverted Via Perambur and T.No 12840 Chennai Central –Howrah Train is slated to
be started from Chennai Beach during this period from 06/09/16 to 07/10/2016 (32

The SR in its twitter page has given a good explanation & background for the same. The fifth and sixth lines are needed as movement of trains in the Moore Market Complex-Basin Bridge corridor is already constrained as both EMU trains as well as long distance express trains have to share the existing track.
The fifth and sixth lines will provide a separate corridor for EMU trains towards Arakkonam to ensure uninterrupted movement of suburban trains thereby reducing commuting time for passengers besides enhancing the sectional capacity.
