I am currently trying to book ticket. I noticed that the name character allowed are only 16, what about ppl with long names like my bro R Thanabalasingaam.......how do i book him. In make my trip they don't even asked for birth date of the person the ticket are purchased for. I don't want problem later on in the train.

Yes, you may book, there will be no problem for genuine passengers with Photo ID. More over this a over night train with minimum halts.
