Just one more question... Do I have to go t o the station to find out whether I will get a seat if I'm WL1, or do they inform me somehow. Either via email or by updating the status on my PNR online? It seems like a huge pain in the ass to have to go all the way to the station to find out that you don't have a seat...

Before 3 Hr of Schedule Departure from SBC, Chart will be prepared for the train & you get to know about berth confirmation (Dont have to pain urself to report @ Station to get updated)!! Use PNR online for Validation & Information!!
To be on safe side, other vacant option can be booked, as been suggested (if not 1AC, even 3A in some other...

You need not go to the station to find out whether your ticket has confirmed or not. Upon booking the ticket, you wud find a PNR No. (much like the Transaction No; Reference No; Booking ID one gets while booking flights, buses, cabs, making online transactions etc).
You can track the current status anytime, by logging into this site and thereby going into the PNR Forum to check the current status of the PNR.
