Yes. Infact the whole Indore-Khandwa route is quite Scenic. I do agree it will demolish the Heritage Structure but conversion is required for the development of that region and IR.
Even after gauge conversion the route will be scenic, and there is a need from long time to have direct connectivity to south from Indore, currently trains run over 350+ kms extra because of this, one good example is Indore-Yesvantpur express. See this blog post on how this will benefit: click here
The other options to get connectivity to south is Indore Manmad new line, but it will take years to get this done, it still just on papers, no movement. Here we are seeing lot of movements.

Khandwa itself is a station towards South from Indore. Khandwa is well connected towards south via bhusawal, manmad etc.
Google Meenakshi express you'll get a good amount of information on the route
