Opinion invited.....
When one purchases a reservation ticket from railway's own counter neither identity proof is asked for nor it is challenged while travelling. But if any one takes help of irctc's online e-ticket booking he/she has to produce identity proof. Why such discremenation is ? Persons booking e-tickets are paying more than those are purchasing from railway's counters.

Mr. Jitesh,
That's correct. Then the alternative is the persons who booked tickets through agents either should carry their ID proofs. Another alternate (Which is not so easy & acceptable process even to me) is that the agent will have a web camera, and upload the photos then & there. This process of taking photos and giving ID cards is there in all Defence establishments. The person who intends to enter the Defence establishment should invariably carry the Photo ID issued by them.

Shiva

Thanks for participation. I do normally travel with e-tickets but in no case I was asked to produce the identity eventhough I carry the same. Then where lies the santity of the system ? More over i-cards issued by educational institutes are not accepted. This is another disparity which requires ammendment. Again thanks to all and wishing HAPPY CHHAT.

E tickets are freely printable on our stationery, on our printer and in as many copies as you may be wishing to have. It can be fax or email copied too. This is the only reason that an Identity proof is required to verify whether the person(s) who produces on demand, is the genuine holder of the ticket.
We need not only to be concerned with the TTE in the reserved coach. It may be checked / required on the Platforms as well as on Exits of the Stations.

seems all right.
Though not fully relevant but please be informed that in case of doubt, ID is demanded even on PRS TICKETS to be satisfied or to detect an irregularity. Since concession costs to the Railways, ID is required to be pocketed by Senior Citizens also as no proof is verified by booking the ticket.
Thanks !
