After seeing the conditions of the rolling stock of IR, I am quite surprised to know that IR has money to spend on bullet trains, but no money for maintenance of the existing rolling stock. It seems as if IR is stuck in the 1970s period. Some locos are near 40yrs old and IR is still putting them on tracks.

We see a lot of rusted and damaged Alcos which come here for rebuilding etc. I mean why doesn't IR retire them and commission new ones in service.

simple............repaairing is cheaper than building newer ones......and we cant afford the luxury of aesthetics seen in the european locos....our locos are very functional and thats what they are designed to be.
I do agree that there are many locos that are due for scrapping but uneven distribution and slow production that cannot keep up with the demand is the culprit here

Today I saw a BWN ALCO on the yard lines here at Patiala in a very pity state. The loco didn't have any pilot seats, the whole floor of cabin was torned apart. The side shutters of the engine compartment were missing , means it was really I a very shabby state as if wherever it was housing was sitting there for years.
