In Ratlam, there was a Diamond Crossing way before 1998. This crossing was BG-MG crossing. Before gauge conversion the Indore-Chittorgarh was MG line and it used to cross the BG Delhi-Mumbai main line. Then IR constructed this Q-Track just after the current Diesel loco shade in Ratlam to bypass the BG track. This way MG line used this 3 kms. long Q-track to bypass the BG line and go straight towards Mandasor. After GC Between Ratlam and Nimach the new line got merged with the current BG line and this Q-track was of no use as MG train used to terminate on PF 1 & 2 at Ratlam.
Now since Ratlam-Fatehabad-Indore us BGed; IR decided to convert the Q-track to BG

so that trains coming from Indore can directly go towards Mandasor. IR is also planning to connect this Q-track to the current Delhi-Mumbai Main line.
Here's an image showing the Q-track position at Ratlam.
