************ Important Achievements of B & S(Bridges & Structures) Directorate of RDSO during Last Five Years*************
Introduction:
Only 2 days are remaining for the Hon'ble RM Mr Suresh Prabhu to table the "Rail Budget 2015" in the Parliament. Now it is an important requisite to look back at the "Achievements and Landmarks set by RDSO" in the last couple of years since 2007. RDSO the "Government Organisation" which is at the helm of all "Research & Developmental Works" of this huge Indian Railways network. Now the achievements of B &

S(Bridges & Structures) Directorate of RDSO can be discussed in the following points:
RDSO Achievements:
1 RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT & INVESTIGATION: The achievements of RDSO in this segement is attached in the Spreadsheet prepared by me with this blog. Apart from this it can be seen in the page link I will give at the end of this info.
2 Development of sleeper for steel girder bridges in Advanced Composites (FRP): To develop alternative to wooden bridge sleeper, RDSO, in collaboration with R&D.E. (Engrs.), Pune and TIFAC, has taken up a project to develop girder bridge sleeper in Advanced Composites (FRP). The proto-type sleepers have been successfully tested at RDSO. Dynamic panel testing was also done successfully at SERC, Chennai. Advisory & Monitoring Committee had declared this project as completed and cleared the sleeper for field trials. Technology transfer document consisting of Specifications of FRP sleeper and Acceptance Tests Plan (ATP) have been received from R&D.E.(Engrs.), Pune. The sleeper is expected to be made available for regular use on Railways by July 2002.
3 CDA trials on ballasted deck bridges: Trials were conducted to determine the co-efficient of Dynamic Augment (CDA) on ballasted deck concrete bridges and also, to validate existing provisions of CDA on the bridges. Detailed report was prepared after conducting trials on 13 bridges (Report No.BS/ 20) and discussed in 71st BSC meeting.
4 Acoustic Emission Technique: Acoustic Emission Technique (AET) is relatively new non-destructive technique, which has high potential for monitoring active cracks on bridges. RDSO has recently procured two sets of AE equipment for use on Railway Bridges.
5 Instrumentation of super-structure of Rail-cum-Road bridge at Jogighoppa, N.F. Railway:
Technical Advisory Group (TAG) advised that superstructure of rail-cum-road bridge at Jogighoppa should be instrumented for measuring stresses in the members before commissioning. Accordingly, two selected spans of 30.5m and 120.0m had been instrumented for strain-gauging of above mentioned bridge. Actual stresses in the steel members were assessed to be less than the designed value, thus, adequacy of design was provided.
6 Testing of Aluminium Alloy Girder: Load tests on aluminium alloy girder, fabricated for use on Indian Railways for formation treatment, were conducted to establish the adequacy of design.
7 Study of noise generated by train movement on Railway bridges: To compare level of noise on bridges laid with different types of sleepers and to improve design of the channel sleeper, trials were conducted and Report No. BS: 32 issued. Improvement to steel channel sleepers to standard drawing of RDSO is not required as far as generation of noise is concerned.
8 Effect of train actuated vibrations on structures located adjacent to track: To study the effect of vibrations generated by movement of trains on structures adjacent to track and to suggest design changes, trials were conducted and Report No.BS-33 issued. No strengthening measures is required for structure located along Railway track.
9 Impact test on FRP sleeper: Tests were conducted to assess performance of FRP sleeper against impact loading and report No.BS-31 issued. Impact resistance of FRP bridge sleeper is better than that of wooden sleeper.

Conclusion: It is to be seen how much importance will be given to RDSO and it's developments, implementation of RDSO guidelines in the ensuing Rail Budget, which is an integral part of our Indian Railway network.

Thanks for your reply. Today I disclose a "True Fact" to you and all the other members of this Forum. If RDSO won't be there in Indian Railways:
1 We can't see and ride on the "Prestigious Train" of IR i.e The Rajdhani Exp and Shatabdi Exp. At present 22 Rajdhanis are plying in whole India. The Credit fully goes to RDSO.(Please refer /blog/post/1357502 to see the Rajdhani Story in 1969)
2 Implementation of high speed Diesel and 3 Phase AC Electric Locomotives(Credit goes to the Engineers of RDSO and Engineers of CLW
...
& DLW)
3 RDSO already instructed IR to commission "Hotel Load" in WAP 5 and WAP 4(Research is being carried on by CLW currently)
4 Introduction of LHB Coaches in all Premium Trains(Credit Fully goes to Engineers of RDSO and Engineers of RCF Raibarelli and Kapurthala now Engineers of ICF Perambur also)
5 Introduction of Bio Toilets in existing ICF Coaches and New ICF Coaches(Credit Fully goes to Engineers of RDSO).
So, without RDSO IR can't proceed.
