Going thru the Premium trains list. I dont see even a single train with 100% patronage. PT Quota is good but having a full train with half the tickets proced at Airlines standard doesnt seem a feasible and sustainable. Air Pegasus & Air Costa should actually track the Railways bookings and lauch flights to the Tier 2 cities.

Thieves loot people where the victims parts with the money unwillingly. Here the people are willingly and consciously paying that much and the fare is shown to them before making the purchase. When people are paying that much and going, whats the fuss all about? For those who couldn't afford, railways also run normal trains. Those who were late and couldn't secure a berth in the normal train cannot expect the railways to come give another train on a congested rail network at the same low fares.

Partly agree RaviRaj. But having a monopoly in any industry is as good as looting.
You arrived at 1AM in night at WFD with your parents. There are 2 autowalas. 1st auto driver quotes 500, 2nd quotes 600. You come back to the 1st guy and he wants 1000 now. Reasonable? Loot? Deal? [Premium Train]
Better would be a bus, an auto, an Ola Mini & a Uber sedan available at the same time with some needing advance booking and some are available till late [PT Quota].

You are talking from a passenger point of view. If you are in the railways and are tasked to resurrect the railways financially you may think and speak differently. The auto guy too is there at an odd time. He too deserves something extra. Obviously rs 1000 is not reasonable and him quoting that fare may be without any rationale but more importantly we don't expect the autowala to show some sympathy. Here though, the railways have rules in place. Teh rates just doesn't jump to rs 1000. From 600 to 700 to 800 etc and then 1000. In simple terms railways are making profits by offering a service something which any commercial organisation always does( monopoly or otherwise) something which they haven't done all these years due to politics and wrong policies.

your auto example forward- Just imagine there were 3 autowalas. Assume One autowala there was willing to ferry you home at rs 200 which is the normal fare. But 6 passengers got out of the station and 3 run and take that auto and pay the normal fare and go home. The other 3 missed the chance for whatever genuine reason they have( heavy luggage, old parents etc) and so have to depend on whatever is available. But this is not what it happened for you, you had only 2 autos and had no choice. But in railways, they have one or two normal trains running with normal fares. You missed getting a ticket there and now pay a higher price to travel on the alternate option that railways have made available to you. Since no one feels travel is as much a bare necessity as say roti kapda or employment the govt too doesn't interfere much.

it is very difficult to draw a line here...evrytime i have gone thru this discussion here on iri, it seems to have a different perspective:
1. primarily on routes from mumbai to north esp up, bihar are expected to run pack on premiums too, as it is better to shell out more and get a cnfrm seat rather than looking for agents who charge absolutely on no reasonable grounds exhorbitant prices
2. on the contrary, the premiums for ngp, ers went quite vacant, so it may be more appropriate to convert them

to sf spls rather.
see ultimately, as we move ahead with time, things are going to change, as we may see pt being brought to all mail/exp trains...so as i said, "its really difficult to draw a line"
