For example Shane Punjab express gets 4 locos..P1,P4,P5,P7 in a week so how is it decided that a particular loco will be given to this train from Ndls for today??Or is it like any loco available in the shed is assigned to any train??
Yes, locomotives are assigned to specific trains based on their number of halts, train category (Raj/Dur/SF/GR/Shat)
.
1. WAP-7 :-
This 3-phaser is compulsory assigned to Raj/Dur/Shatabdi/GR as these are the premier trains of IR, has to maintain their aggressive schedule. P7 is also given to Mail/SFs which has numerous halts enroute to accelerate fastly to maintain schedule with so much halts...

Talking about Shan-e-Punjab, P4 mostly.
P7/P5 given if it is available extra at ETS at ASR/NDLS.
P1 occasionally seen due to non-availability of P4/P5/P7
