Raymond Charles 30 blog postsJust checked, a Mumbai Ahmedabad air ticket for Feb 23rd (Not much in advance) is Rs. 1500 which is less than Executive Chair Car ticket on Shatabdi and not a great deal more than CC or 3A or 2A on other trains. In the future, airlines will become more favorable for even short distances. In such a scenario, bullet trains whose tickets will be much costlier than Shatabdi will not be preferred. In my opinion, it is a waste to spend so much money on building Bullet train infrastructure. Look what E. Sreedharan of Konkan Railways & Delhi Metro fame has to say -> click here Your comments are welcome!

Yes, it is less costly to build airports as you just need land for 2 airports at both ends. For railways, land is required for the whole route and then there is cost to maintain the infrastructure. Building elevated route increases the cost too. Such projects in India are known to get delayed and their budget increase exponentially due to bureaucracy & red tape. As more and more people start traveling by air, air travel will become more and more affordable as economies of scale comes into picture. Right now, no country apart from China is looking to build costly Bullet Trains because it is not worth in this age of low cost air travel. Even China is facing problems with bullet trains!
