Such practice is usually followed to deliver locos due for maintenance to their home sheds. Usually this is done using passenger trains, but in some cases, the loco is sent with an express train and will be changed with a fresh one at the station that has the loco shed. Other examples are KK switching from one set of ALCO twins to another fresh set t GTL and Kerala express switching to a fresh WAP4 at Erode.
