i booked a ticket in Garib Rath from ROU to BBS. there were 246 seats available. I choose the Lower berth option but IRCTC booked the Side Middle one.
When 246 seats are availble , there must be some lower berth available, but don't know why and how IRCTC booked a Side Middle.

If you were trying to book an e-ticket you could have specifically used the option "Book my ticket only if atleast one lower berth is allotted" while booking.
Even if you had booked this through a PRS you could have instructed the booking clerk accordingly. He would have notified you if lower berths are not available.
You would have had the final call of booking the ticket or not

Any how the train has many empty berths it is possible to adjust by putting a word with TTE.
