Humsafar Express: Sneak peek into Indian Railways new fully AC 3-tier train

Indian Railways is all set to roll out the Humsafar Express in October, meeting another promise made by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu during his Railway Budget speech. Humsafar Express has been envisioned as a fully air-conditioned three-tier service. It is one of the three trains that were announced for reserved passengers.

The others Tejas and UDAY, are still in works. Humsafar Express is being made at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala and FE Online has learned that two rakes of the new train are currently in the final stages of manufacturing. We bring you an exclusive sneak-peek into the Humsafar Express and its features: (Image by Indian Railways)

According to Indian Railways, the train's seats will be much more comfortable compared to others in the category.

The seats have been provided with better padding, say RCF officials. They also have 'more comfortable' head rest for upper berths, the officials say.

The Humsafar Express will have mobile and laptop charging points with every berth. The trains will also have GPS-based passenger information system.

This fully air-conditioned LCB (Linke Hofmann Busch) 3-tier coach train will also have all display boards that will also have braille facility for the visually impaired.

Other features of the proposed train include CCTVs, fire and smoke detection systems.

The coaches will have bio-toilets, which is in line with Indian Railways vision of ensuring defecation free tracks.

The toilets will also boast of plush interiors, odour control systems and fire and smoke detection alarms.

The coaches will also boast of a vinyl coating on their exterior front with an attractive colour scheme.

The Humsafar Express will also have an optional service for meals. Prabhu, in his Rail Budget speech, had said, that Humsafar and Tejas trains will ensure cost recovery by way of tariff and non-tariff measures.

And in line with that, Indian Railways plans to keep the fares of Humsafar Express around 20% higher thatn that of normal Mail and Express services.

Sources told FE Online that two rakes of Humsafar Express (each rake with 20 coaches and 2 power cars) will be ready by month end.

All the people crying here for 20% higher fare.....Do you know that currently you are not even paying the cost incurred by IR to run the train. Second class pays roughly 50% of the actual cost incurred by IR to run the train. AC class passengers pay 70% to 80% of the cost. Its only Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto paying full cost of their train (that too when train is occupied end to end more than 90%) . PAssengers of these 3 class trains never cry. Its the rest who dont pay the entire cost of journey are crying.
