Just to add a corollary to the above, 'Karka Sankranti' is the exact reverse of Makar Sankranti in astronomical sense. Falling on 16th July every year, Karka Sankranti marks the beginning of Sun's southward journey. The Sun becomes 'Dakshingami' and hence Karka Sankranti is also known as 'Dakshinayan' (See, reverse of Uttarayan :) ). Days start becoming shorter and night hours start increasing with effect from 16th July. Both Uttarayan and Dakshinayan last for 6 months each.
