the system still needs a lot of improvement. i agree with most of the issues pointed out by you except for the seat map. a running train has an entirely different dynamic than a bus or flight. during acceleration and application of brakes there are forces which can derail the train if the mass of the coaches are individually and collectively not effectively balanced. the indian railways reservation system thus starts alloting seats from the middle coach and in the centre of the coach and moves towards both the ends. so it doesn't give us a seat map to choose from and offers only a preferred berth.
