Prior to this Hyderabad used to have Slip coaches running with the Grand Trunk express and the Madras-Delhi Southern express. Right from it's inaugural, this was running with a diesel link between Kazipet and Delhi.

The predecessor to this train was the New Delhi-Madras 'Southern express' introduced on April 1st, 1964. This was a faster train than the existing Grand trunk express and used to run bi-weekly initially. By October 1st, 1964, it started running 5 days a week, and for the remaining 2 days, a fully air-conditioned express used to run in a somewhat faster schedule. This arrangement continued for a while.

A lot of these old legends are still called by their old names by many senior citizens and railway staff (Karnataka express as 'KK' is the best example I guess).
This name change was a result of the Anti-Hindi agitations in Madras in the 60's. The timetables from those years are very inconsistent, with some calling it as Dakshin, while the others called it as Southern. The name change was just to satisfy the protestors.
