Even if the tickets are from GNWL and then to RAC, I still differ from your views. The migration of RAC tickets to confirmed must have occured only on the happening of cancellations in general tickets. As the journey date is 15.4.2010, there is no question presently for release of unused specified category quotas. How do we know with certainty that current PNR will be alloted berths at the time of chart preparation either from release of unused quotas or against ticket cancellations. Can't be sure that allotment will happen in the same coach. Is there any other sure basis you are looking at, other than GNWL basis as mentioned in your reply.

I am ready to bet on this that they will get all berths in same coach only. It does not matter whether confirmed by cancellations of passengers or release of unused quotas, all vacant berths are collected and considered for allocation to all unallocated passengers in order of booking RAC and WL number. Since they are RAC2, they stand the 1st priority for compact accomodation.

If it happens this time, it can not be concluded that every time it will happen this way. Berths will be allocated from the list of berth nos. which became available pursuant to cancellations or remained vacant due to non-utilisation of speficied quota tickets. However no harm in tracking this post and hence I have bookmarked this post.

It will happen everytime in bigger quotas where running RAC is less than 10 or even less than 100, sometimes even WL 100. Smaller quotas it may not happen. Infact, if I have to book for family and there are few berths available, I never book ticket. I keep on checking until the status comes in RAC, and then book. The advantage is that I get compact accommodation with desired berth types. I do this for bigger quotas and this has worked always.
