Shivamogga is the railhead to the Malnad region (western ghats) of Karnataka. It is home to a lot of waterfalls like the famous Jog Falls (India's 2nd highest plunge waterfall) and the less famous Kunchikal Falls (Highest waterfall in India).

It was in Shivamogga, that one of India's greatest writers Kuvempu was born. It was his concept of "Universal Man" - that was adopted as the name of the recently introduced IR train - Vishwamanava Express.
