How does a driver knows when to apply brakes such that the train will stop exactly around the station?

A Loco Pilot informs the guard through wireless system about an approaching station's outer signal when it's crossed. Later, the LP applies brakes and slows down the train to change tracks & get into the appropriate platform. All this in Train Running is a combined team effort of the LPs, Guard(s), Points men, Gang men, Outer Cabin Supervisor, Station Master and other IR Staff.
