Sakleshpura - Subrahmanya Ghat Section.
-------------------------------------------------- -----------------
.
There are many things that can be said of this section......
...
one of the steepest BG sections of IR, an Indian engineering marvel, a section that descends drastically from some 889 m to 114 m, the numerous tunnels and bridges, the hardworking IR men who brave the wild animals, leeches and rain to keep the section working, the intermediate stations - totally cut off from the world and having to depend on the passing trains for everything.....
But the thing that comes foremost to the mind is the mesmerising beauty of the dense forest and the mountains that this line cuts through. It will leave you speechless.
<
And SWR has done one of the few right decisions by giving this train LHB rake. Some ____ commented that this train doesn't "deserve". As if they are the ones to decide.
They need to travel through this section to know the continuous curves winding down/up the gradient and the strain it puts on the couplers. If any train "deserves" it ..... then it is this and other trains on this section, which will give them added safety.

Just a few glimpses - my pics.

Men at work!
A few pics of the personnel who maintain this line. There is a small army of them in this 55 Kms stretch. Most present between Donigal and Shiribagilu. This 36 Kms has men positioned at nearly every 100m, at the entrance of tunnel, inside the tunnel, on the bridge, before the bridge - who whistle as the train passes.

stay where ever they could pitch their small tents.
The tents are basically a tarpaulin or plastic sheet over a few sticks to prop them up and a few vessels, a lamp and plastic pots or buckets to catch rain water falling on the roof. Few have old corrugated sheets for their huts.
Their protection from rain is just a plastic sheet doing the work of raincoat. Its the leeches which are the big problem, but they have just simple footwear for work.
Hats off to these people who work in these trying conditions to keep the line open and warn when there is a mudslide or animal movement or falling trees (notice pic 2 where trees are perpendicular to the hill and right above the track - a lot of constant monitoring and clearing is required at these places) and other obstructions.
When the work is major which these men cant handle on their own, then they send excavators (last pic) and tractors on flatbed cars from SKLR.
