for live trip update you should register the pnr and also select register for trip diary while doing so

To give the updates in live trip diary, your parents(passengers) must have a mobile phone with GPRS (internet) facility and the pnr should be registered for trip diary under his login ID. the PNr cant be registered in mobile version. So register it prior to journey in computer/laptop etc OR you may register it now in your laptop. Ask them to login with the same ID and they can provide the live status there after.
If they carry a laptop, that also will be fine

If they do have smartphone with GPS, they can click on auto update of location which will find the location then click to post it, Otherwise they can click on the station name through which the train passed and click post.
