That is an operational restriction, not a technical one. An EMU can cover as much distance as a MEMU can. Both are exactly the same things, except for the wider coaches in EMUs to enable carrying more traffic in suburban areas.
Note that earlier too when MEMU's did not have toilets, they were restricted to 160km run distance or a 4 hour travel time (whichever was shorter).
If platforms, track side structures etc are moved to create enough space for the wider EMU rakes, then the same rakes can be run on...
