if its a ticket bought from the counter, you can take the refund of the balance journey by surrendering the ticket in the counter. if its e-ticket, you have to take certificate from the TTE/SM of the station where you get down and apply for tdr.
other bloggers may correct if i am wrong.

for tickets taken from counter - refund by surrendering at counter.
for etickets - take certificate and apply tdr by logging in and specifying reasons for tdr. then wait for refund.

This is what indianrail website says : ''REFUND ON PARTIALLY USED TICKETS :
For partially used tickets where a passenger terminates his journey enroute, a ticket deposit receipt shall be issued by the station master and the ticket holder may apply for refund to the chief commercial manager (Refunds) of the concerned railway.''
