Some facts about T18
1. First engine-less train: While many of us have seen engine-less trains (metro trains in cities), this is for the first time that Indian Railways will introduce a self-propelled train for inter-city travel. The self-propulsion technology will also allow for faster acceleration and deceleration, hence reducing the total journey time. The use of this self-propulsion technology for larger distances is a leap for Indian Railways which will treat Train 18 as a prototype for future trains as well. While Train 18 will be LHB-platform AC chair car train, eventually Indian Railways is looking to introduce aluminium bodied train sets as well for long distance travel. The experiment with Train 18 will serve to be a stepping stone in...

Train 18 is an Indian semi-high speed train, an intercity electric multiple unit, a type of self-propelled train without a separate dedicated locomotive.
It was designed and built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Chennai under the Indian government's Make in India Initiative over a span of 18 months. The unit cost of the first rake was given as ₹100 crore (US$14 million), though the unit cost is expected to go down with subsequent production.
At the original price, it is estimated to be 40% less costly than a similar train imported...
