Pic 1:Model of proposed Dhanushkodi Railway Station
Pic 2: Layout of RMM-Dhanushkodi new line.
As per the layout one bypass line towards Dhanushkodi coming from Pamban with one more station as New Rameswaram Station in Dhanushkodi stretch and also three halt stations Jada Theertham, Kothanda Ramar Temple, Mukundarayar Chathiram.
One more line coming from Rameswaram station and joining at New Rameswaram station.

Yes, Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram are on the same island. No bridge is required to connect them.
There were two old alignments for this line. In the attached screenshot, the orange line with the white bars (on the right side) was the original alignment from Rameswaram to Dhanushkodi, opened in 1914. This line was constantly covered by sand dunes that had to be cleared.

Unless they start a ferry service to Sri Lanka, I don't see any major commercial benefits from this line. Dhanushkodi is a ghost town now and even tourists will be staying at Rameswaram only.
If they are really insisting on a laying a railway line for promoting tourism, they can revive the old MG lines and run heritage specials using the MG stock that is being put out of use now due to Gauge conversion.
The expenditure will be much lesser, and there will not be too much impact on the region.
