This train was introduced as a fast connection between Madras and Mangalore from 1st April 1965.
This was done by cancelling the Jolarpet-Shoranur link express which connected with the Madras-Bangalore ICE (present day Madras Central - Mysore ICE) at Jolarpet and with the Malabar express at Shoranur to provide a through connection to Mangalore and Cochin.
