Sir, how does connecting the traction motors in series/parallel/mixed configuration affect the traction or running of loco ? Like WAM-4 & WAG-5 had variants with traction motors connected in series as well as parallel.

Different motor configurations have different advantages. Also, note that this is exclusive to the WDM2 series locos. None of the other locos in IR have this 'jerky' behaviour.

Using a series-parallel combination at the beginning provides better torque, so that heavier loads can be started smoothly. But the motors will run slower.
As the train picks up speed, the need for torque is

reduced and it becomes important for the traction motors to run faster. So, the motors are switched to a parallel combination.

You must remember that the WDM2 series were designed in the 1950's.Back then, the technology was restrictive and all systems were DC-current based. So, this was one of the only ways to get the best efficiency in the locomotives.

The EMD's are more modern designs and use 3 phase traction motors. They work on different principles and do not need such a motor configuration change. So, they don't have this jerky behaviour.

The feeling is exactly like when a gear is changed in the car, and I have experienced these kind of jerks only in ALCOs. There are many types of jerks said in different comments, but I am sure I understand that feeling of what what you are explaining and is going over my mind completely. 😝

So is that the reason sir why during the transition period,ALCo's chugging stops for a second and starts again as the fuel supply is stopped for that moment?
