How are the up and down numbers of a train decided? Is there some criteria for this? The numbers of 16593/94 were interchanged when regular train numbers were restored. Why was this done?

I am not sure but I think the first 2 numbers represent the category & zone of train
For eg; For mail exp Train Numbers start with 1
For SF exp Train Numbers start with 2, also
Usually CR trains have 2nd digit as 1 and SWR trains have 2nd digit as 6 & SCR has 2nd digit as 7 and the rest...

A train going from its PM station usually has an odd number and a train coming to its PM station usually has even number AFAIK. There are exceptions to this as well
Yeah, I too thought so until I saw exceptions. Then we can say that there's no definite criteria for this.
