Expected tha. Prime slot hai aur Shatabdi/JS jaisa koi competitor bhi nahi hai early morning HWH se.
VBs are doing great on the routes where Shatabdis were failing... Clearly, faster connectivity / Travel time is the key behind success of this train !
Shatabdi on this route has literally failed to even get augmented to 12 coaches ! People are paying premium to travel in these trains... hoping for more faster VBs and shatabdi replacements in the future...

Imo the failure of Shatabdi is due to having similar timings to BBS JS, with similiar time taken. Shatabdi would also have been successful had the timings been reversed. Being an hour faster also helps VB but still, early morning departure from Kolkata is the biggest boost.
Shatabdi is very slow on this route. slower than many other trains. and IR is asking for a premium on top of that. Here in Delhi also , KLK Shatabdi runs closely to UNA JS .. but both of them are popular with different types of passengers . even JS , Saharsa Gareeb Rath and ASR Shatabdi depart at the gap of 10 mins from UMB. Then also Shatabdi and JS gets pax from here towards Delhi !
