If higher class has enough vacant seats then you are likely to be upgraded. You gotta look at occupancy figures if you want to get auto upgraded I got upgraded twice so yeah auto upgradation do happens though it is more of a luck to get auto upgraded. If someone's ticket is in waiting or RAC they are likely to be auto upgraded but this upgradation is rare as what I have seen.
