there is nothing to be amazed.. out of the stated figures , share of SL coaches would even be less than 10% . i dont have full figures .. but a rough estimation.
around 24 million passengers travel by IR daily out of which 40% belongs to Mumbai Suburban network and hence a major chunk of 2S travelers comes from Mumbai Suburban areas which nearly equals to 9.5 million daily passengers.
then we have other less popular but crowd puller suburban networks of Kolkata which ferries 2.5 million daily passengers ,
...
Chennai Suburban network which ferries 1.2 million daily passengers , hyderbad , Delhi , Bangalore , Lucknow-kanpur.. all of them ferry in around 2 million daily passengers. (more than 15 million suburban passengers daily )
so more than 62.5% of the traffic IR is ferrying comes from the suburban network of the metro cities..
Than we have EMUs and passenger trains connecting major tier 2 / tier 3 from the regional centers (tier 4 , 5 ), used by daily commuter for work based trips.. which would account for atleast 3-5 million daily passengers around 15-20% of daily share..
Rest are the long distance travelers (above 150 kms) which may use 2S , sleeper and AC classes ... which would be around 17.5 % of the total out which AC travelers as stated are around 5% ...

Agree
Railway Minister further says that the rake composition of present in 1AC 2 2AC 6 3AC 6-7 SL 4GS for the question posed over reduction of SL and overcrowding. Do we see any LHBfied train having 4GS and 6-7 SL even the trains having 6-7SL are further being reduced with 3AC or 3ACE. Every day we see a new notification about coach replacement and now a days we see lesser trains being concerted to LHb rakes.

Bhai ek baat bataun.... jyadatar log travel kaam se karte hain....ghumne ke liye travel kam hi log karte hain....jab aapko Jana hi hai to aap ye dekhoge ki k
ticket mile.... Sleeper me 2/5 coach hone ke karan waiting 100+ hai....aur AC mein WL 5 to aap AC hi karoge.....agar bilkul hi afford nhi kar sakte to hi Sleeper mein karoge...

The gross passengers travelled by IR is around 2 crores per day and out of that 1 crore passengers travel in suburban trains, 60 lakh passengers travel in Passengers trains and only 20 to 22 lakh passengers take Mail / Express /Superfast, Sathabdi, Rajdhani, Vande Bharat kind of long distance reserved trains. So putting a number of 5 percent travelling in AC out of 2 crore per day passengers is misplaced. Effectively out of 22 lakh long-distance reserved travellers around 10 lakh are travelling in AC class and 12 lakh are travelling non - AC ( sleeper and 2S) classes.

Non-AC sleeper berths or coaches are getting replaced by 3A and 3E coaches as Indian Railways is unable to recover economic fares in SL class and was unable to increase ticket prices. The only way was to do Tatkal, dynamic pricing and increasing composition of AC class coaches.

The ultimate solution is to increase number of trains from daily average 2500 express trains (as of today) to 5000 express trains in next 3 to 5 years. This can be achieved mainly increasing speeds on key metro routes by using Push-Pull trains (Amrit Bharat trains) and Vande Bharat and VB sleeper coaches.

IR has to create additional long distance berths of around 30 lakhs, which means around 2000 to 2500 trains per day. The Railways has to come up with Clone trains and squeeze double number of Express train on every route or increase the track length by new lines, doubling, tripling and quadrupling etc. Based on demand of the route. Now EDFC abs WDFC is operational so around 500 additional trains can be made operation in Delhi -Mumbai and Delhi - Howrah corridors.
