Yes. This happens . I am lucky twice. Once from Bangalore to Mavelikara and another time from Chennai to Ernakulam.
Actually I always check this box..... but my ticket was never upgraded...... That is because most of the time I book in 2AC... may be...

Even I have been upgraded to 1AC from 2AC a couple of times in the recent past.
As long as there is a WL quota in lower class and seats are vacant in higher class then upgrade is possible.
The only point to be noted is that whenever an upgration happens either all persons within a PNR will be upgraded or none are upgraded but no partial upgradation is allowed.
