This is a manual signal indicator to give "line clear" for a particular railway line. Lit with kerosene lamps even today. Still in use in Kalka/Simla Heritage railway system in India.
The red and green enamel paint has stood vagaries of weather for the past 110 years ! Kudos to British.
This picture was taken in Barog, which was once a breakfast station for British, between Kalka and Simla.
