The salary wat u said is enough for anyone to quite normal companies n apply for IR.
so there will b dearth of LP's, ALP's, Shunter Crew, etc.
But, its still not convincing!! 70 k salary in IR, tat sounds even more curious to me till date.

AFAIK, a Crew of Freight or Passenger, never crosses 50 K too in a month.
And yes, for Freight Crew, its 6-7 hrs working time and exceptional in cases to go around 10-11 hrs. For Passenger crew, its the same process as the Freight.
each of them get a roaster per month and tat's how they work. Exceptional for leaves, sick leaves, casual etc.

Dude...I'm in a Rly Settlement...Here you go out of ur home & everywhere you see either a TTE/LP/Guard....etc etc..Forget about Salary..I know some retired LP's(85 yrs+) who are getting pension of around Rs 50k & since last 25 years Rly has paid them more than 1 Crore even after they quit from their duty using VRS...Not only that, when an on-duty staff dies, not only his widow wife gets pension but also one son/daughter gets permanent job in Rly both together are looting at least Rs 65000/-month...These are one of the primary reasons why N.F.Rly is running at such losses.& yes, scale of TTE/Guard/LP/ASM are almost same...its only the mileage which creates huge difference.
waiting time ay yard means, when the LP gets a call of duty he has to reach the crew booking lobby(normally situated in PF#1 of a standard station & in the yard in case freight siding is completely separated from Main Station)...Suppose a Loco Pilot has to join duty for NJP-NBQ & while the incoming goods crossed AUB(57 km before NJP) the call-boy reports him at his duty...he gets ready & reaches the yard...if it was a Mail/Exp then he could be pretty sure that the train will reach in another 1 Hr but freights can take 3-4 Hrs depending upon the overtakes. Now after reaching NJP yard, sometimes freights wait for 1-2 Hr to give preference to Mail/Exp again..that adds upto 5-6 Hrs even before joining duty..Then at duty he has to spent another 7-8 Hrs...So upto max 15 Hrs duty can be extended.
