I read a news item regarding encroachment of railway land and information given by minister reads as under : "Mr KH Muniyappa minister of state for railways informed the Lok Sabha that Indian Railways have approximately 1.065 million acre of land, out of which 2460 acres of land, which constitutes 0.23% of total land holding, is under encroachment"
Here readers may be led to believe statistically that railways have very low percentage of land encroached and nothing to worry or lose by Railways.

the fact is hidden in answer. Minister, supported by intelligent Bureaucrats, says that Railways have 1.065 millions of acres land, and at this point the game of statistical fooling starts.
Railways run on land and that track land is included in the total land shown as 1.065 millions of acres. Now will any one take fancy that railway has so much free land then why bother for meagre 2460 acres of land. But here again the encroachment is not on a single plot of land of 2460 acres but scattered pieces of land at different locations all over India. For such encroachements , railways have either no active force to look after clearing it, or there is conivance at some level with the help of local leaders of political parties who have hands in gloves with rly officials and occupants of land.
Here the question is not of small percentage of land occupied by public, but how much earnings railways could have done or how much damage that occupants do on such encroached land , could have been saved.
Now some one may tell, that China occupied thousands of land in 1962, and Pakistand occupied Kasmir, then why bother for the land of Railways occupied by Indians ? after all they are our bretherns who are living in India.
