Barrackpore: A middle-aged woman was arrested for allegedly throwing her baby daughter off a running train on the Sealdah-Ranaghat section on Monday morning. While the 16-month-old girl is in hospital in a critical condition, her mother has reportedly told the GRP that a goddess had told her to give up her child.
The incident occurred around 10.50am after the Up Krishnagar local left Naihati. As the train chugged on towards Halisahar, passengers were shocked to see the woman suddenly flinging the baby on the tracks. After getting over their initial sense of disbelief, one of them pulled the chain. As the train came to a halt, some of them ran towards the spot where the child had been thrown off. They heaved a sigh of relief to see her alive, rescued by some slum dwellers living along the railway tracks.
The girl, however, received several deep wounds on her head, legs and arms and was taken to Naihati State General Hospital at once. The passengers also caught her mother, Purnima Saha, and handed her over to the GRP.
