I wish to know what happens if I cancel a tatkal WL ticket before chart preparation? (Say as 1 hour prior to chart preparation)
Do I get full refund or don't I get any refund.
I know that after chart preparation the WL tkt automatically gets canceled from IRCTC & money refunded.
Also I wish to know why they r not willing to refund

at least 50% of the booking amount in TATKAL cancellation?
Some of this forum members know my yesterday's situation. My tkt was CKWL 6 & 7 and not got confirmed. Still I tried very badly (traveling 100 kms from Coimbatore to Shorannur) to get a berth by chasing TTEs, this that & what ever method I know. All in vain. My children were crying so bad that they couldn't meet their father. They get only 10 days leave only for half yearly exams.
Even station staffs felt very embracing seeing them and in fact almost 5 ~ 6 staffs came in to convince them with cookies & chips (I m very grateful to them for such a kind heart). But it was the biggest pain I came across as for as traveling is concerned.
If railways allow at least 50% refund, ppl who booked in tatkal but cannot travel, will surely cancel the ticket since they are sure they are getting back 50%. Bcoz of such an id**tic method whomsoever seriously wants cancel also won't cancel thinking what do I get if I cancel.
Genuine & needy passengers like me are seriously in trouble bcoz of this. Unless someone cancels the tkts my tkt won't get confirmed when all the quotas are full.
Just my 2 cents.... Comments are welcome
Regards
A Painful Mother

Theoratically it sounds OK that 8-10 hrs before only one should get ticket, and not like the present system.
But imagine you are needing a tatkal ticket and the way you suggested is implemented, still the hindrances in getting tatkal will be that window timings may not be suitable to book ticket. Or queue will be so long that your turn can not come in time to book tatkal, and then additional window for tatkal service will have to be provided, and the problem of Touts will continue as is now.

Its really unfortunate that you have undergone some bad experiences.
i fail to understand as to why you did not book your tickets much before when you know you have to travel - (they get only 10 days leave only for half yearly exams) - and in each year, they may get the same number of holidays around the same time. in this case, with some foresight, you could have booked your tickets in advance. (+/- one or two days leave can be taken) that would have saved you the hassles of uncertainty due to non confirmed bookings - particularly when travelling with children.
Atleast,

due to this experience, from next time pl reserve your tickets well in advance (even if you cancel it, the charges will be very less compared to the hassles you have to undergo with your children) and dont depend on tatkal tickets.
pl do not misunderstand me, but i really dont know the reason for not booking your ticket in advance when you fully know that children have 10 days holiday and would like to visit a place.
thanks and sorry for asking you a question which others have not asked.
Its still an unfortunate incident which you will not forget for a very long time, but experience, good or bad, makes us to see life differently.
i am sorry if any of my above view hurts you, but the pain which you had undergone has raised this question. my apologies once again.

Well I think u only gone thro the initial post & not gone thro the inner posts...
Pls read /blog/post/94035/29 (simply read reply no 29 in this blog)
I wrote clearly that we booked 5 tkts from 23rd to 26th of DEC from same origin to various GOA destinations & 2 of them r booked 1 month before but still in WL.

We can't decide abt traveling 90 days in advance and all each and every time.... And in our own experience whenever we booked a tkt 60 days before (we never booked any tkt in 90 days advance), we end up canceling it bcoz it never went as per planned either bcoz of work schedule or bcoz of various other issues.
In those 6 tkts (I booked one via tatkal today morning also for Monday), now 1 tkt which is GNWL is close to getting confirmed 4 tomorrow. Current situation: WL 4 & 5.
The other one got confirmed for Monday. From CKWL 9 & 10 it got confirmed on the same day.
At last it is confirmed that we are traveling at least latest by Monday if not tomorrow......
Regards
