There are 11 berths still vacant in this train in 1AC on 02-02-2011. I tried booking ONE berth today with lower berth choice. Money deducted, but berth not confirmed. I got the message, " The reservation as per your requested details could not be processed due to one of the following reason:
"As you have opted for atleast one lower berth.

First thing you must know that system never allot berth for 1AC while booking for any train.
If AV shows means you will get confirm message only when you book the ticket. For 1AC berth are alloted at the time of chart preparation only. It will alloted as per the PNR number and passenger in that PNR number. Suppose a PNR has 4 passenger then they will alloted one coup to this PNR .

Yes! No berth in 1st Class (AC or Non AC excluding Shatabdi 1AC which actually is Executive Chair Car) is allotted on ticket booking and only an indication is provided whether one stands Confirmed or Wait-listed. Berths are allotted only on charting.
I presume that once your ticket has been approved with the LB condition, there would be some arrangement under which you are guaranteed with a lower berth.

This is all money game..unless money is not credited to IRCTC no choice set is alloted. Suppose there is a last LB berth avbl and 2 person opt for it then that fraction of sec after payment will decide to whom it will go. If this activity is done before payment one of the two will be unhappy with the result.
