Actually Britishers started the construction of Mysore-Thalassery railway line via Coorg. Due to first world war it is stopped. after that the line was destroyed due to landslide/floods. The second attempt was also held due to the second world war. In 1950's then Railway minister Lal Bahadhur Shastri himself travelled this route and sanctioned the line. Though many governments had promised to revive the project, nothing has materialized so far.
The last survey is conducted on the route connecting Mattannur (proposed Cannanore-Mattannur Airport line), Karikottakkari, Nadukani, Ponnambettu and Mysore. (Lot of surveys, resurveys happned. Only they made money nothing happend other than that as of now.) Some earlier survey route passes through Hura, Hullahalli, Saragur, Kabini, D.B. Kuppe, Bavali,...
more... Palvelicham, Payyampalli, Mananthavadi, Nadapuram and Panur.
As per the Railway's survey, the distance between Mysore and Thalassery would be around 298 km while the distance by road is only 185 km. Railway concluded that the project was not viable & the project was shelved because of this. However, according to the survey conducted by the action council the distance would only be around 150 km, and the environmental impact would be less.
The Thalassery-Mysore railway line will never be a reality if the Nilambur-Nanjangud line through Wayanad comes. Then Kodagu will be out of the picture. (otherwise also nothing expects..)
