Yes, trains in southern TN are empty to some extent due to very vast network of buses throughout day and night. Madurai has arguably the best and most buses in entire country as per my observation. Hence the moniker - city that never sleeps :)
I been to Madurai couple of times, yes it has good network. But i think Vijayawada has the best and most buses , variety if we see in our country. Vijayawada has buses to Bhubaneswar and Pune/mumbai too apart from Chennai, Banglore, Hyderabad, Vizag
Yes , could be a reason . I have visited southern side of TN just once or twice, will visit Madurai once :)
